The story began on Halloween night, when Patterson and Cardoza, students from Massachusetts, allegedly set off on a mission. Dressed in dark clothing and face coverings, they were captured on surveillance cameras walking towards the Harvard Medical School campus. But here's where it gets controversial... they were carrying Roman candle-style fireworks, which they ignited, and then proceeded towards the Goldenson Building, a facility housing neuroscience research labs.
And this is the part most people miss: the pair climbed over fences and scaled scaffolding to access the roof. At 2:45 a.m., an explosion rocked a fourth-floor research lab in the Department of Neurobiology. Investigators later discovered that a large commercial firework had detonated inside a wooden locker.
Ted Docks, the FBI's special agent in charge, emphasized the potential severity of the situation. "By sheer luck and the swift response of first responders, no lives were lost and injuries were avoided."
The suspects' movements were tracked through surveillance footage. Between 2:45 and 2:50 a.m., they were seen visiting the fifth floor and then exiting in opposite directions. Cardoza was later captured on video removing his pants and discarding them in a bin. Patterson, meanwhile, returned to the nearby Wentworth campus, charging his phone and running between buildings.
At 3:40 a.m., Patterson met up with Cardoza and another individual, and they were seen walking towards the Massachusetts College of Art and Design campus. Witnesses later identified the two men, confirming they had been at Wentworth for Halloween events.
